When asking for an extension of time it is important to request it in business days and not as an extension to a date. This will make calculating the decision’s due date much simpler for the applicant and the agency and means your decision is much less likely to inadvertently go deemed.

Privacy complaints are by their nature stressful for both the complainant and the agency. The complainant is often upset about the manner in which their personal information has been handled, and they may feel angry with the agency while the agency is in the position of having its decision, acts or practices questioned.

1 July 2014 marks five years since the commencement of the Right to Information Act 2009 (RTI Act) and the Information Privacy Act 2009 (IP Act), including new privacy, assistance and monitoring functions for the Office of the Information Commissioner. The RTI Act and IP Act framework promotes more open, transparent and accountable government, which in turn increases community participation for better informed decision-making.

The first compliance review of a local government, Rockhampton Regional Council (RRC), was reported to Parliament on 6 May 2014. The review against the RTI and IP Act obligations identified one issue that is likely to be relevant for all other local governments – the importance of all business units communicating well with individuals seeking information – to be promoted by the adoption of an agency-wide communication strategy and through training for all staff.
