Privacy Awareness Week 2012
The Office of the Information Commissioner (OIC) is responsible for promoting privacy awareness and best practice across the public sector, but also to promote greater awareness of privacy rights, responsibilities and protections in the community.
Although Queensland’s Information Privacy Act 2009 (Qld) (IP Act) does not govern the way individuals and private sector corporations handle personal information, OIC has information and tips so you can strengthen the protection of your personal information.
PROTECT your privacy by becoming privacy aware of who, or what, may be watching you:
- camera surveillance
- shoulder surfing
- public computers and unsecured networks
- trash or treasure?
DETECT potential privacy risks or breaches by limiting the details you share with strangers:
- social networking
- privacy policies
- filling out forms and surveys
- know when to say ‘no’
CORRECT threats through action by protecting your PC and other devices:
- malware
- encrypt sensitive information stored on your PC
- what you need to know about email
- accessing your money online
- passwords
