Watch the PAW 2024 keynote and panel discussion
This year’s Privacy Awareness Week (PAW) launch held in Brisbane (Meanjin) on 7 May 2024 is now available to watch online. The event brought together experts to discuss privacy and technology, as well as ways to improve transparency, accountability and security.
Australian Privacy Commissioner, Carly Kind, delivered the keynote presentation titled ‘Powering up privacy in the data age’.
Ms Kind discussed the need for advances in technology (like artificial intelligence) to be tempered with responsible practices that empower individuals when it comes to their data. She also noted opportunities to power up privacy protections, in the context of both the Queensland and federal governments committing to privacy law reform, and how public and private sector organisations could enhance transparency, accountability and security to meet the challenges of the data age head on.
The keynote was followed by an expert panel discussion (moderated by journalist Kim Skubris) featuring:

- Chris McLaren, Chief Customer and Digital Officer, Queensland Government
- Scott McDougall, Queensland Human Rights Commissioner
- Paxton Booth, Queensland Privacy Commissioner
The insightful conversation delved into topics ranging from privacy, data breaches, technology, innovation, risks, opportunities, ethics and human rights.
The launch event also included opening remarks from Information Commissioner Joanne Kummrow and a special video message from UK Information Commissioner, John Edwards.
