Watch a panel discussion on proactive and informal release

January 23, 2023 - 3:45pm

OIC will be participating in a panel discussion on 15 February 2023 covering proactive and informal release of government-held information and Queensland public sector staff are encouraged to register for the online event.

The discussion will focus on information access and the differences between formal application processes and proactive and informal release mechanisms (otherwise known as the ‘push’ model).

Organised by the Office of the Victorian Information Commissioner (OVIC), the event will feature speakers including:

  • OVIC’s Information Commissioner, Sven Bluemmel (moderator)
  • NSW’s Information Commissioner, Elizabeth Tydd
  • OIC’s Information Commissioner, Rachael Rangihaeata

Victoria’s Freedom of Information Act is considered a first-generation model of access to information, generally requiring individuals to ‘pull’ information out of government through formal application processes. This contrasts with NSW and Queensland’s second-generation information access legislation that requires government agencies to ‘push’ their information out to the public, and applications are a last resort.

In this session, Ms Rangihaeata and Ms Tydd will discuss the operation of proactive and informal release of information in their respective jurisdictions.

The online event will be held via Microsoft Teams on 15 February 2023 from 11am-12pm Queensland time (12-1pm AEDST).
