Solomon Lecture recording now available
Every year, the Office of the Information Commissioner host their signature event, the Solomon Lecture, to mark International Access to Information Day in September. This year the keynote, 'Reef of Truth: What Coral Can Teach Us About Power, Access and Action’,was delivered by Sheree Marris, a marine biologist, award-winning science communicator, and adjunct at James Cook University.
In this thought-provoking Solomon Lecture, Ms Marris explored the vital role of environmental information in shaping resilient ecosystems and informed societies. Using coral reefs as a powerful metaphor for connection, collaboration and fragility, she highlighted how access to trusted, timely data can save not only species but also build and embed public trust.
In an age of digital disinformation and ecological crisis, Ms Marris drew attention to access to environmental information as not simply a right, but our lifeline. Healthy societies depend on healthy environments and ensuring access to environmental facts is key to creating a more prosperous, sustainable future for all.
The keynote was followed by a panel discussion, moderated by journalist and media commentator Ms Madonna King, and featuring:
- Sheree Marris (keynote)
- Suzanne Thompson (Founder of YACHATDAC and Integrity Member of the Emissions Reduction Assurance Committee)
- Professor Brendan Mackey (Director of Griffith University’s Climate Action Beacon)
- Stephanie Winson (Right to Information Commissioner, Queensland).
