OIC encourages agencies to adopt more open data strategies and policies

March 4, 2025 - 4:13pm

Open Data Day is being recognised around the world, with events happening between 1-7 March 2025 to raise awareness about open data and the value it adds to transparent and accountable government.

The celebration brings a range of people together including individuals, public servants, designers, developers and statisticians to learn about and foster the global open data community.

This year’s theme focuses on ‘Open data to tackle the polycrisis’, which takes a look at the intersections between poverty and multiple inequalities, violence and conflict, and climate and disaster response.

OIC will be marking Open Data Day, because we believe it plays an important role in supporting open, transparent and accountable government, and we encourage other public sector agencies to adopt more open data strategies and policies.

After all, open data goes hand-in-hand with proactive disclosure of government-held information and is consistent with Queensland public sector agencies’ obligations under the Right to Information Act 2009.

Making non-sensitive data available for anyone to access, use and share is important, because it helps to build trust in government, as it can increase participation, support evidence-based decision making and help develop innovative new services.

More information and a calendar of events can be found on the Open Data Day website.
