April 9, 2024 - 2:33pm

OIC is gearing up to celebrate Privacy Awareness Week (PAW) next month, with the Queensland launch event happening on Tuesday 7 May at the State Library of Queensland, featuring a keynote speaker and panel discussion.

Australian Privacy Commissioner, Carly Kind, will be delivering the keynote titled ‘Powering up privacy in the data age’. She will discuss how it is essential that promising advances and innovations in areas like artificial intelligence are tempered with responsible practices that empower individuals when it comes to their data.

Ms Kind will also explore opportunities to power up privacy protections in the context of both the Queensland and federal governments committing to privacy law reform.

In addition, she will share how public and private sector organisations can enhance transparency, accountability and security to meet the challenges of the data age head on.

The Queensland launch event will also include a pre-recorded video message from the UK Information Commissioner, John Edwards (who was previously the New Zealand Privacy Commissioner), as he shares his thoughts on the overarching 2024 PAW theme ‘Privacy and technology: improving transparency, accountability and security’.

Following the keynote, a panel of experts will also discuss the changing landscape of privacy and technology as well as the opportunities, challenges and risks. Emcee and journalist, Kim Skubris, will moderate the panel featuring:

  • Carly Kind, Australian Privacy Commissioner
  • Chris McLaren, Chief Customer and Digital Officer, Queensland Government
  • Scott McDougall, Queensland Human Rights Commissioner
  • Paxton Booth, Queensland Privacy Commissioner

PAW is an annual event shining a light on the importance of protecting and respecting personal information, whether you are a community member or work for a Queensland public sector agency.

The launch event will be held at The Edge, State Library of Queensland, South Brisbane from 9.30am to 11.30am on Tuesday 7 May. It is free to attend in-person or livestream.
