Join the celebrations for Privacy Awareness Week 2025
OIC is counting down to Privacy Awareness Week (16-22 June 2025), and we encourage public sector agencies and the community to get on-board and join the celebrations at Queensland’s launch event.
Privacy Awareness Week (PAW) is an annual event that shines a light on the importance of protecting and respecting personal information, both from the perspective of agencies and the community.
This year’s theme is ‘Privacy: it’s everyone’s business’, which underscores the serious nature of privacy and that we all play a role.
Every year Queenslanders are becoming more interested and invested in their personal privacy and the value of their personal information, given the digital world we live in. The community expects public sector agencies to be doing everything they can to protect their personal information.
Join OIC for the PAW launch event
To mark the occasion, OIC will host a free PAW launch event on Tuesday 17 June at The Edge, State Library of Queensland, starting at 9.30am and featuring a keynote and panel discussion.
Author, researcher and Human and Organisational Performance advocate, Georgina Poole, will deliver the 2025 keynote titled ‘Learning from data incidents: What safety can teach us about privacy’.
The focus of this year’s keynote ties in with Queensland’s new mandatory notification data breach scheme (MNDB), due to start for public sector agencies from 1 July 2025, with the exception of local government which will follow one year later. (The MNDB is part of the reforms under the Information Privacy and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2023.)
While human error is widely acknowledged as a leading contributor to data breaches, often responses focus on individual accountability, rather than understanding the factors behind the breach and using learnings to improve the systems people work within.
As part of her keynote, Georgina will share insights to help agencies better understand and respond to privacy breaches, including how system design, context and everyday pressures shape human behaviour.
The PAW launch will also include a panel of experts who will discuss the changing landscape of privacy in Queensland as well as opportunities, challenges and risks. Emcee and journalist, Kim Skubris, will moderate the panel featuring:
- Leanne Harvey, Vice-President (Administration) and University Registrar, QUT
- Dr Jodie Siganto, Director, Privacy 108
- Kathy Sundstrom, National Manager Outreach and Engagement, IDCare
- Susan Shanley, A/Privacy Commissioner, OIC
