Hear from data and privacy experts at 2023 PAW launch event

April 12, 2023 - 12:08pm

As part of this year’s Privacy Awareness Week (PAW) celebrations from 1-7 May in Queensland, the OIC will be hosting a keynote presentation and panel discussion focusing on data breaches, protecting privacy, risks to organisations and individuals as well as resilience.

The event will take place on Tuesday 2 May at The Edge, State Library of Queensland, Brisbane (Meanjin).

Information security expert Mr Troy Hunt, CEO of the website ‘Have I Been Pwned’, will deliver the keynote presentation titled ‘Lessons from billions of breached records’.

Mr Hunt will draw on his extensive experience and take the audience behind the scenes of what caused some of the devastating data breaches in recent times and how they continue to wreak havoc today.

Afterwards an expert panel, moderated by journalist Ms Jillian Whiting, will discuss how we can make organisations more resilient in the face of increasing cyber threats and human error, how to identify risks and how to cultivate a culture where employees prioritise privacy. The panel will also address the question: ‘If employees are our front line of defence, how do we make good privacy management behaviours stick? Is it time to go back to basics?’

The expert panel consists of:

  • Mr Troy Hunt, CEO of ‘Have I Been Pwned’, Microsoft Regional Director
  • Dr Alistair Ping, Adjunct Professor at QUT Graduate School of Business
  • Ms Nicole Stephensen, International Association of Privacy Professionals Member and KnowledgeNet Chair for Queensland
  • Mr Paxton Booth, Privacy Commissioner, Queensland.

Register to attend the PAW launch in-person.

The event will also be livestreamed, but registrations are not necessary to access the link.

PAW is an annual celebration shining a light on the importance of protecting and respecting personal information, whether you are a member of the community or a public sector agency that deals with people’s personal information.
