Data Privacy Week urges people to take charge of their data

January 19, 2023 - 11:12am

OIC has signed up to be a Data Privacy Week Champion and help raise awareness about the benefits of protecting your data online.

This year Data Privacy Day has turned into Data Privacy Week, which runs from 22-28 January 2023.

Privacy is a right and people are reminded, when they can, to make informed decisions and only share their data when they feel it is appropriate.

Staying informed about data privacy also helps to create better digital habits.

Apps, websites, devices and software often seek out more data than is necessary, so asking the right questions is important such as: ‘Why does this website need to know my location?’ or ‘Why is this app asking for my contacts?’ or ‘Why do they want to access my photos and microphone?’

By paying attention to these requests and thinking about whether the information is necessary to provide or not, we can all be more informed when it comes to taking charge of our data.

Other tips for Data Privacy Week include:

  • Knowing what you can and can’t control
  • Develop good digital habits
  • Regularly check your privacy settings
  • Delete apps you don’t use

More information and resources are available on the Data Privacy Week website.

OIC will be sharing tips throughout the week on our Twitter and LinkedIn channels.

Data is the story of you. Every click, post and view creates data, so it is worthwhile protecting it because it is valuable.
