Celebrate Open Access Week 2024
OIC will be joining other agencies around the world to mark Open Access Week from 21-27 October 2024.
The global event is celebrated by individuals, institutions, agencies and communities to promote the open sharing of knowledge and how it helps advance policies and social issues.
It brings together the academic and research sectors to continue learning about the benefits of open access and help make it the new norm.
The Open Access Week 2024 theme is ‘Community over commercialisation’. It is a call to prioritise approaches to open scholarship that serve the best interests of the public and the academic community.
Openness can create pathways to more equitable knowledge sharing and help address the inequities that shape societies and our response to them.
Queensland’s Right to Information Commissioner, Stephanie Winson, notes that this years’ theme highlights the importance of the public interest in access to information, which can be achieved if information technology is adopted with an open by design bias.
Ms Winson says “It is important to strike the right balance. There are significant benefits to the community through technological advancements, but these must seek to ensure that the public is able to access information in how these advancements affect their lives through government decision making.”
After celebrating International Access to Information Day last month, OIC looks forward to continuing the momentum and marking Open Access Week by raising awareness about open access issues, challenges and opportunities with staff and the community.
