Celebrate Human Rights Week 2023

November 27, 2023 - 2:26pm

OIC will once again be marking Human Rights Week from 1-10 December 2023.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which played a pivotal role in paving the way for every piece of legislation that has come since at international, federal and state levels, including Queensland’s own Human Rights Act.

The theme this year for Human Rights Week is ‘Universal means everyone’, acknowledging that universal human rights mean just that – human rights for all.

Human rights aren’t just about individual people. Recognising the rights we all hold helps bring the community together and reflect our shared values, like freedom and respect, as a foundation for helping address the challenges we all face. When we treat everyone with dignity and respect, everyone is better off.

Human Rights Week is a significant occasion for OIC to recognise, particularly because of the work we do as an independent Officer of Parliament, serving the Queensland community.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights also enshrines the right to privacy as a fundamental human right, and the right to freedom of opinion and expression, including the right to seek and receive information.

OIC encourages the community and Queensland public sector agencies to recognise the importance of Human Rights Week 2023 by marking the event in their own way.

More information can be found on the Queensland Human Rights Commission’s website.

OIC will be marking the occasion by raising awareness about human rights with staff and the community, so look out for themed posts on our X/Twitter and LinkedIn platforms.
