Joint statement from the latest International Conference of Information Commissioners

June 11, 2024 - 10:06am

During the International Conference of Information Commissioners (ICIC) held in early June, representatives from over 30 countries voted to issue a public statement titled ‘Transparency and digital age: the information commissioner’s role and citizen empowerment’.

The statement highlights the ever-present need for transparency and open government to empower citizens through their right to access government-held information.

Further, while the ICIC recognises the opportunities for digital technologies to enhance government transparency, it is necessary to ensure digital initiatives respect individuals’ privacy rights and uphold ethical standards.

The ICIC is a permanent worldwide network of information commissioners. Key objectives of the ICIC are to promote and protect access to public information as a central pillar of social, economic and democratic governance.

The Office of the Information Commissioner is a member of the ICIC and Queensland was represented virtually by the Information Commissioner and Right to Information Commissioner over the three-day conference held in Tirana, Albania.

OIC congratulates the host of the 15th ICIC, Information and Data Commissioner of Albania and the ICIC secretariat, Federal Institute for Access to Public Information and Data Protection, for an excellent and stimulating conference.
