A range of reports identify the importance of providing accurate information in a timely manner:
- In a 2025 community survey on information access, 95% of Queenslanders said they believe the right to access government information is important or very important.
- Research published by Monash University in 2025 revealed that only 39% of Australian adults were confident they knew how to identify misinformation.
- A report by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development report, Facts not Fakes: Tackling Disinformation, Strengthening Information Integrity, highlights that the proactive release of accurate, evidence-based information builds public trust and confidence in government and democracy more broadly.
Government agency websites and online tools are key mechanisms for communicating with and providing services to the community. They are also a critical source of factual, credible information for public use.
OIC have recently reviewed the online proactive disclosure practices of 20 public sector agencies to examine how well digital tools are being used. The report, with recommendations, will be published in June so keep an eye out for a news article.
