Our role in protecting privacy

The Office of the Information Commissioner (OIC) Queensland is dedicated to upholding and promoting the privacy rights of individuals under the Information Privacy Act 2009 (Qld) (IP Act). We oversee how Queensland government agencies manage personal information, ensuring transparency, accountability, and compliance with the law.

Key privacy responsibilities

  • Handling privacy complaints
Mediating accepted privacy complaints when individuals believe their personal information has been mishandled by a Queensland government agency.

  • Promoting awareness and understanding
Educating the public and government agencies about privacy rights and obligations under the IP Act.

  • Monitoring and auditing compliance
Reviewing and reporting on how public sector agencies manage personal information and comply with privacy principles.

  • Contributing to policy and legislative development
Commenting on policy and legislative reforms related to privacy and the handling of personal information.

Queensland Privacy Principles

The IP Act outlines Queensland Privacy Principles (QPPs) that govern how personal information should be collected, stored, used, and disclosed by Queensland government agencies. These principles ensure that personal information is handled responsibly and with respect for individuals' privacy rights.

Making a privacy complaint

If you believe your personal information has been mishandled by a Queensland government agency:

  1. Contact the agency: Raise your concerns directly with the agency involved.
  1. Escalate to OIC: If the agency does not resolve your complaint within a minimum of 45 business days, you can submit a privacy complaint to the OIC.
