OIC celebrates NAIDOC Week

June 27, 2022 - 3:49pm

The Office of the Information Commissioner will be celebrating NAIDOC Week from 3-10 July 2022 and the theme ‘Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!’

NAIDOC Week is an annual celebration across Australia recognising the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

It is also an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in the celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth.

The OIC has released its Cultural Capability Action Plan 2021-23 (PDF, 211.67 KB), recently held cultural awareness training sessions for staff and, together with other jurisdictions around Australia, released a joint statement about a consistent approach to accessing Stolen Generation records.

The statement recognises the important role of historical records in truth telling and sharing history, intergenerational healing, redress and reparations for Stolen Generation survivors and their families.

It also commits to working together with The Healing Foundation and stakeholders to champion timely, easy access to records through informal access schemes wherever possible, with formal access applications required only as a last resort.
