OIC is joining the Queensland public sector in commemorating Human Rights Week from 1-10 December 2024. Every year we mark this special occasion, culminating in Human Rights Day on 10 December.
The United Nations theme for 2024 is, Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now.
It has been five years since the commencement of Queensland’s Human Rights Act 2019, and Human Rights Week is a good time to reflect on what the Act means for the community and how it can be protected and strengthened into the future.
Human Rights Week is a significant occasion for OIC to recognise because of the work we do as an independent statutory body serving the Queensland community.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights enshrines the right to privacy as a fundamental human right, and the right to freedom of opinion and expression, including the right to seek and receive information.
Queensland’s Human Rights Act includes the right to ask for and receive information and ideas from other people (including the government), and the right to privacy.
Human rights aren’t just about individual people. Recognising the rights we all hold helps bring the community together to reflect our shared values as a foundation for helping address the challenges we all face.
OIC is marking the occasion by raising awareness about human rights with staff and the community. We’ll also be sharing Human Rights Week themed posts on our LinkedIn platform.
