Webinar - Privacy Impact Assessment
We are offering a one-hour webinar for agency officers wishing to better understand a Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA).
A Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) is a tool that agencies can use to assess the privacy impacts of a new project. It can identify ways to meet the obligations set out in the Information Privacy Act 2009 (Qld) (IP Act) and the community’s privacy expectations.
Key benefits of undertaking a PIA include that it:
- supports good governance and informed decision-making
- ensures that the project is compliant with the IP Act
- encourages cost-effective solutions, since it is cheaper to make changes that will address privacy issues during the design phase than attempting to retrofit changes after a system is operational; and
- reduces the risk of low adoption rates or participation in the project’s deliverables by providing assurance to stakeholders that the project has been designed with privacy in mind.
A PIA is a key way of building trust, as it gives confidence to those who will be affected by the project that the privacy impacts have been considered and appropriately addressed.
Conducting a PIA is not mandatory under the IP Act. However, the OIC encourages agencies to carry out a PIA for any project that will involve the handling of personal information.
What will it cover?
The webinar will work through a hypothetical proposed new program that has significant privacy implications, with a focus on three elements: mapping personal information flows, identifying applicable privacy principles and ensuring compliance with the Information Privacy Principles. It will also discuss the importance of integrating a PIA into a project management methodology.
