What is confidentiality?

September 13, 2018 - 3:37pm

OIC has prepared two new resources about confidentiality to assist both decision makers and members of the public.

The Basic guide to confidentiality guideline is an introduction to confidentiality, including the criteria necessary for a document to be exempt under the RTI Act. It also addresses contractual confidentiality and what confidentiality is not, covering topics such as email disclaimers and the difference between confidentiality and privacy.

The What is confidentiality? A guide for applicants and third parties information sheet is intended to help give applicants and consulted third parties a better understanding of what establishing confidentiality requires. Like the guideline, it also covers what confidentiality is not and a number of other topics. We hope that decision makers will find this information sheet a useful tool to provide applicants and third parties when the subject of confidentiality arises.

The new guideline and information sheet join the existing Breach of Confidence guideline and Annotated Legislation – Breach of Confidence to create a suite of confidentiality resources.
