Privacy Breach Notification

February 20, 2017 - 11:43am

The Commonwealth's introduction of mandatory data breach notification has taken centre stage in Australian privacy news, but as exciting as it may be, it's important to remember that it won't impact Queensland agencies. The Information Privacy Act 2009, its IPPs and its NPPs, will remain unchanged.

Of course, this doesn't mean agencies can't notify individuals impacted by a data breach. The Office of the Information Commissioner supports actions that support open and transparent government and allow affected individuals to take control of their personal information.

For assistance in handling a privacy breach under Queensland's Information Privacy Act, please see our Privacy Breach Management and Notification guideline, our earlier news item, and, as always, feel free to contact our friendly enquiries service on enquiries@oic.qld.gov.au or 07 3234 7373.
