Christmas/New Year closures and calculating business days

December 15, 2015 - 1:26pm

OIC confirms that only notified public holidays do not count when calculating due dates. For the 2015/2016 Christmas/New Year period, the following days are public holidays:

  • Christmas Day Public Holiday - Friday 25 December 2015
  • Boxing Day Public Holiday - Monday 28 December 2015*
  • New Year’s Day Public Holiday- Friday 1 January 2016

*The Holidays Act 1983 provides for an extra public holiday to be added when Boxing Day falls on a weekend.

All other weekdays in this period, besides those listed above, are business days and must be counted when working out due dates, even if your agency is closed.

Agencies and Ministers need to ensure that any due dates which fall during this period are carefully calculated. In some circumstances it may be necessary to contact applicants and ask for a further specified period before a deemed decision is taken to have been made.
