AI ethics framework and principles released
The Australian Government has released its ethics framework for businesses and organisations who design, develop, integrate or use artificial intelligence (AI).
The release follows public consultation and includes a framework and a set of voluntary AI ethics principles.
As noted by the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science, the principles are aspirational and intended to complement – not substitute – existing AI related regulations.
This includes relevant Commonwealth and State privacy regulatory regimes (for example, in Queensland, the Information Privacy Act 2009).
The Department has also produced a guide about how and when to apply the AI ethics principles.
In 2019 the OIC provided a submission in response to CSIRO's Data 61 discussion paper providing in-principle support for the development of an ethical framework to guide AI and machine learning in Australia.
