Tell us what you think about releasing Department of Transport and Main Roads information
The Office of the Information Commissioner (OIC) is currently reviewing the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) as part of an ongoing review program. OIC intends to review each Queensland Government Department at least once every five years. TMR is having its five year review now, in 2011-12.
The review is to establish whether TMR is complying with the Right to Information Act 2009 (RTI Act) and chapter 3 of the Information Privacy Act 2009 (IP Act). The review also looks at TMR’s proactive publication of information.
TMR plans, manages and oversees the delivery of a safe, efficient and integrated transport system across Queensland for road, rail, air and sea. In performing this function TMR collects a vast array of information. As part of the review, OIC is interested in finding out what you think about the information TMR does or does not publish. What would you like to see? Who wants this information? What could you do with the information? Do you think there are risks in publishing information held by the TMR? And is it released in an acceptable time period?
These are the questions we would like your help to consider. So, please tell us what you think below.

RE: a better method of discovery
I just use google. Using some of the advanced search operators - makes the info just "jump out"
Do you mean the disclosure log?
I assume you are referring to the information released here : http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/About-us/Right-to-Information/Disclosure-log.aspx
In answer to your questions:
> What would you like to see?
- a wider variety of usable, machine-readable data formats - not just PDF
- a better method of discovery (e.g. location, subject, keyword search) - not just an increasingly long list
- less censoring of information that is "not relevant" to the RTI application
>Who wants this information?
- The media, lobby groups, interested individuals, innovative thinkers
>What could you do with the information?
Get the facts without the spin.
>Do you think there are risks in publishing information held by the TMR?
Loss of privacy, however this is avoidable
>And is it released in an acceptable time period?
Have not made an application, so I don't know.
Do you mean the disclosure log?
Hello Spanner - thank you for your comments.
Yes, the disclosure log is one of the ways in which information can be published, but this review is not limited to disclosure logs.
In this review, OIC is looking at a range of methods that TMR could use to publish information, which include, but are not limited to
- the TMR website,
- the publication scheme,
- administrative access schemes,
- social media like Facebook and Twitter,
- interactive applications for example i-Phone apps, and
- any other methods of publication that you might think would be useful.
We'd be interested in hearing what you or others think about the usage of these methods as well.
