Profile of the Privacy Commissioner

Lemm Ex, Principal Privacy Officer, Office of the Information Commissioner is currently the Acting Privacy Commissioner.  Lemm has worked as a government lawyer for over 15 years in the fields of discrimination, human rights, privacy and child safety.  Lemm also has worked extensively in the area of privacy starting out with the Commonwealth Office of the Privacy Commissioner before moving onto various senior privacy positions in Queensland State Government. 

 

The Information Privacy Act creates obligations on government agencies to responsibly manage personal information.  It also creates a new right to lodge complaints when citizens believe a privacy breach has occurred.

 

The Privacy Commissioner can mediate privacy complaints, conduct reviews of systemic privacy issues within the public sector, issue compliance notices to agencies found in breach of the privacy principles and decide requests to modify application of the privacy principles where there is an overriding public interest in doing so.
